L’acier D2 est un acier à haute résistance assez résistant à la corrosion (mais n’est pas inoxydable). Les couteaux en acier D2 sont capables de conserver un tranchant tranchant pendant longtemps. De nombreux fabricants renommés fabriquent des couteaux et des couteaux pliants en acier D2 : Böker, Ka-Bar, Bestech, Kershaw et autres.
