Das japanische Taschenmesser Higonokami wurde in Miki, Präfektur Hyōgo, Japan, hergestellt. Dieses Reibungsklappmesser tauchte erstmals 1896 auf, als Folge der Schwierigkeiten, mit denen Metallarbeiter und Schmiede im postsamuraiischen Japan nach den bedeutenden Reformen von Kaiser Meiji im späten 19. Jahrhundert konfrontiert waren. Das Verschwinden der Samurai-Klasse führte zu einem Rückgang der Nachfrage nach Schwertern, und Schmiede begannen, Werkzeuge und Messer anstelle von Schwertern herzustellen. Seitdem ist das Higonokami-Klappmesser ein beliebtes Werkzeug und ein Alltagsmesser.

Higo - ist der alte Name der Provinz Kyushu, aus der das Originalmesser stammt. Auf Japanisch bedeutet "Higonokami" der "Gouverneur von Higo". Heutzutage darf nur noch ein Hersteller der fünften Generation KaneKoma seine Messer gesetzlich ausschließlich "Higonokami" nennen.
