La marca de cuchillos Al Mar fue creada en 1979 en Estados Unidos. El fundador de la empresa, Al Mar, tenía experiencia de servicio en las fuerzas especiales estadounidenses y aplicó activamente estos conocimientos al desarrollar cuchillos orientados a condiciones reales de campo.

La fama mundial llegó a la marca gracias al cuchillo S.E.R.E. (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape), desarrollado en 1985 junto con el coronel James Rowe, también antiguo miembro de los Boinas Verdes. Este modelo fue reconocido como el número 1 en la categoría de cuchillos tácticos plegables y se convirtió en uno de los más emblemáticos de la gama Al Mar.
