En 1897, un grupo de inmigrantes de Sheffield fundó la Tidioute Cutlery Company, que posteriormente se convertiría en Union Cutlery Co. KA-BAR alcanzó fama mundial durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En 1942, la compañía desarrolló el USMC Mark II (cuchillo de combate/utilitario), que fue adoptado por el Ejército de los Estados Unidos. Este cuchillo tenía una hoja de aproximadamente 18 cm de largo y un mango de cuero. Su fiabilidad y versatilidad lo hicieron popular entre los militares, participando en numerosas operaciones militares desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta las guerras de Irak y Afganistán.

Hoy en día, KA-BAR ofrece una amplia gama de cuchillos tácticos y militares. La línea de productos también se ha ampliado para incluir navajas plegables y accesorios de marca. KA-BAR utiliza principalmente acero al carbono 1095 Cro-Van y D2 para sus cuchillos.
