Ils sont très populaires parmi les professionnels de l'armée aux États-Unis, qui utilisent ces couteaux extrêmement solides depuis 1942. Cependant, l'histoire de KA-BAR remonte bien avant 1942. En 1897, 38 hommes ont fondé la Tidioute Cutlery Company, considérée comme la prédécesseure de KA-BAR. En 1923, l'entreprise, désormais connue sous le nom d'Union Cutlery Co., a reçu une lettre d'un chasseur. Il avait été attaqué par un ours et lorsque son fusil a refusé de fonctionner, le couteau qu'il avait acheté chez Union Cutlery l'a aidé à tuer l'ours. La lettre elle-même n'était plus totalement lisible, et les seules lettres qui ressortaient de la phrase "a tué un ours" étaient K A et B AR".
