Saya (鞘) ist der japanische Begriff für eine Schwertscheide. Heutzutage bezeichnet das Wort „Saya“ auch eine Holzscheide für Küchenmesserklingen. Solche Scheiden schützen die Klinge bei Lagerung und Transport. Meistens ist die Saya mit einem speziellen Verriegelungsmechanismus (Mekugi) ausgestattet, der ein Herausfallen des Messers verhindert. Traditionell werden Sayas aus leichten, feuchtigkeitsbeständigen Holzarten – zum Beispiel Magnolie, Zypresse und heute auch aus stabilisiertem Holz – gefertigt.

Im Gegensatz zu Universalscheiden werden Sayas individuell für die Form und Länge eines bestimmten Messermodells gefertigt, um einen festen Sitz zu gewährleisten. Zudem unterscheiden sich die Holzscheiden verschiedener Hersteller in Dicke und Tiefe. Japanische Messerhersteller bestellen sie in der Regel bei einem Zulieferer auf Basis der Größen ihrer Markenmodelle.
