Die Blackhawk Knife Company wurde 1993 gegründet. Black Hawk bedeutet wörtlich „Schwarzer Falke“. Dies war der Name eines amerikanischen Militärhubschraubers, der von 1974 bis 1985 in Serie produziert wurde und sich in den Vereinigten Staaten großer Beliebtheit erfreute. Nachdem das Unternehmen 1976 einen Wettbewerb für die Entwicklung eines militärischen Kampfhubschraubers (amerikanischer Mehrzweckhubschrauber) gewonnen hatte, begann die Lieferung an die US-Armee (vollständiger Name: Sikorsky Black Hawk UH-60). Der Firmenslogan lautet: „Ehre ist die Grundlage des Lebens.“ Seit ihrer Gründung konzentriert sich die Firma auf die Entwicklung und Produktion von militärischer Ausrüstung, Waffen, Messern und Munition.
