The Schrade company has a rich history, dating back to 1892, when George Schrade, an English inventor, founded the Schrade Cutlery Company in New York. Schrade soon merged with Walden and began producing its first patented, revolutionary knife with a push-button automatic blade release—the Switchblade.

Throughout its long history, Schrade produced folding knives and fixed-blade knives, including the iconic Old Timer and Unche Henry lines. In 2004, Taylor Brands LLC acquired the rights to the brand, patents, and all intellectual property. The new owner decided to move all production to China. Later, in 2016, Taylor Brands, along with the Schrade brand, was acquired by Smith & Wesson. Today, the Schrade brand produces a wide range of products, including folding and tactical knives, machetes, multi-tools, survival knives, and much more.
