The Opinel #12 Beech 001084 folding knife is ideal for everyday use. It is slightly larger than the usual Opinel pocket knives, so it is suitable for more tasks. Historically, this knife was also used at the table - for Alpine cheese and ham. All Opinel knives are equipped with a unique Viroblock® blade locking system: the lock is a sleeve with a cut, which is located directly at the junction of the blade and the handle. When open, the cut on the sleeve is aligned with the plane of the blade. To fix the blade, the sleeve must be turned. The classic Opinel blade has a Yatagan shape. The shape of the Yatagan is inspired by the traditional Turkish sabre.

The larger models feature the simple yet effective Virobloc safety twistlock mechanism, which allows the blade to be locked in both the open and the closed positions. This pocket knife is a classic in the true sense of the word. The blade of this knife is made of carbon steel. It is very easy to sharpen and hone to a thin edge, making it razor sharp, yet very strong. Carbon steel is more susceptible to rust than stainless steel and therefore needs to be cleaned properly and kept dry.
