Shigeki Tanaka

Fourth-generation blacksmith Shigeki Tanaka and his small workshop in Miki are highly valued for their skills and experience, passed down through generations. His family business dates back to the Meiji period, when his great-grandfather began making sickles. Tanaka's grandfather and father also specialized in this tool, but with the decline in demand for traditional sickles, the family began making kitchen knives. The family faced a choice: adapt or disappear. Shigeki Tanaka himself learned blacksmithing at Takefu Knife Village under the guidance of renowned master Shiro Kamo, whose knives you can also buy in our store. In 1999, Shigeki Tanaka returned to Miki to join the family business, and after his father's death, he took over the reins completely. Tanaka-san works with a small team in his forge under his own brand. All knives are handcrafted. The master works with a wide range of steels, including Aogami, VG10, and R2/SG2. Many knives feature a Kurouchi coating, which gives them an authentic look and protects the blades from corrosion.
